UN gender equality and women’s empowerment manager Suri Kempe was shamed for not wearing a headscarf after intervening during a domestic dispute while waiting for a train at KLIA today. Her experience went viral after she took to Facebook to out the man’s behavior.

Seeing a man shoving a woman she believed was his wife or girlfriend, she told him to stop abusing his partner. The man was not happy, told her to mind her own business, and that the woman was his wife. As if that makes it OK.

Telling him that it was within her rights to report him for abuse, he retorted that he could treat his wife as he wanted and that it was not a matter for her to interfere in. He also called her names. She writes that he was aggressive and confrontational.

The man’s wife then apologized for his behavior; however, the man was incensed, and told her that she wasn’t even wearing a headscarf and therefore was not even worthy enough to offer criticism.

At this point, Suri took his photo and told him in Bahasa: “You hit your wife, you have a foul mouth, and yet you have the heart to curse me for not wearing a scarf?”
