A woman was groped by another passenger while taking a local bus from Johor Baru to her hometown of Batu Pahat. The attack occurred 30 April, and came to light after the girl, known as Xin Yan, posted about her experience on Facebook, urging others not to keep silent.
She stated that throughout her journey the man behind her would reach around and touch her waist and thighs. Yet, every time she turned, he would look the other way. At this moment, she decided to take a photo of the man.
Falling asleep, she had a rude awakening when she felt a hand on her breast, and woke up to the man now sitting in the seat beside her. She let out a scream and said, “He made a quick dash back to his original seat. But I got up and confronted him, shouting ‘you buat apa?’ (‘what are you doing?’), and he acted like nothing happened and pretended to adjust the air condition vent above him,” she said.
Xin Yan raised the alarm to the bus driver, and several passengers assisted in restraining him, so that he could be taken to the nearest police station. However, when the bus stopped at Parit Raja, in Batu Pahat, the man made a dash for the emergency exit. He was chased down by several passengers and citizens, and promptly taken to the Parit Raja police station.
Writing on her Facebook page, she urged victims of sexual assault to speak out, and not remain silent. Sexual assault was not a small issue, and that those on the bus can help you.
