A wild boar surprised shoppers at a mall in Putrajaya yesterday before being rescued.

Photos of the rare sighting that were posted to social media showed the lone boar out and about inside the Alamanda Shopping Centre before it was captured by eight firefighters and handed over to the local wildlife department. It was the first time a wild boar had entered any mall in Malaysia, according to fire and rescue official Shaari Abdullah, even though Alamanda was located near a forest.

“We’ve received reports of wild animals in housing areas before,” he said. “This boar probably came from a nearby forest, but it is the first time any wild animal has walked into a mall.”

The mall is surrounded by the Rimba Alam Park and the Putrajaya Botanical gardens. Videos of the wild boar casually strolling into the sports equipment store Al-Ikhsan on the ground floor was circulating online.

“Is that a pig? Yes it’s a wild boar!” a voice in the video posted by social media user @Twt_Putrajaya could be heard saying. “You normally see wild boars outside, but maybe this boar is different, it doesn’t care.”
