Why did KLIA2 cost so much? The MACC is wondering too

The cost overruns behind the construction of the new KLIA2 airport have been raising eyeborws for a while now, and it seems enough questions are floating arond to warrant a formal inquiry.

The Consultation and Prevention Panel of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has proposed the establishment of a panel of inquiry to find out why the cost overruns and delays behind the new terminal had to happen.

The panel’s chairman Tan Sri Johan Jaaffar the inquiry should seek to find answers to questions on financial and cost management, and to identify any negligence.

“It should verify design variations, cost variations and construction management, including those attributable to poor design and planning.

“The panel of inquiry should be mindful that the cost of construction has ballooned to almost double the original amount,” Bernama reports Johan as saying yesterday.

Johan went on to say that reports of delays and cost overruns had attracted negative media attention to KLIA2, as well as embarrassment to the government.

“While the advisory panel is pleased that klia2 is finally completed and opened for operation, we are concerned about reports of shoddy worksmanship,” he added.

KLIA2 was initially expected to cost RM2 billion and was scheduled to be completed in April 2012. Instead, the final price tag for the airport was RM3.6 billion and it only opened on May 2 this year.
