Penang authorities earlier today arrested 10 individuals who cosied up in a hotel room in Butterworth, a town in Penang.

The culprits, six men and four women, were between the ages of 15 and 23.

“We found them having a party,” Seberang Perai police chief Noorzainy Mohd Noor told the press

“Furthermore, half of them tested positive for drugs.

“They have been fined RM1,000 (US$250) each for breaking lockdown restrictions.”

Gatherings in small spaces are prohibited under current lockdown regulations.

Butterworth in Penang is currently part of a district-wide lockdown due to the sudden increase in COVID-19 cases. Penang has reported 1,654 infections since the virus entered Malaysia in February, with 26 new cases recorded yesterday.

The five who tested positive for drugs have been sent to the Seberang Perai police department for further investigations under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which prohibits the use or possession of drugs for recreational purposes.
