A businesswoman has been remanded by the police after she hurled abuses at officers who fined her for driving without insurance and paying road tax.
The 34-year-old, identified only as “Wawa,” remained in police custody today after a video of her arguing with officers circulated on the internet over the weekend before it disappeared. Police were investigating her for criminal intimidation and had also confiscated several of her personal belongings, including the clothes she was wearing during the incident, her handphones, car keys, and a car registration card.
“We seized the woman’s clothing as proof of identification of the person in the video,” Kota Kinabalu City police chief Mohd Zaidi Abdullah told reporters yesterday. The police did not reveal her full name nor the business she was in.
The woman was stopped at a roadblock in Kepayan several weeks ago when police officers on the ground discovered that her road tax and insurance had expired. When giving her the ticket, the woman reportedly lashed out, saying in Malay: “Lucky you are a man, if you were a woman, I would strip you and pounce on you (Nasib kau lelaki, kalau perempuan saya kasi telanjang kau dan rungkup kau).”
The incident is believed to have taken place on June 1. The woman was arrested at about 11:30pm on Sunday at a condominium in Jalan Lintas.
Three smartphones belonging to officers on the ground were also seized as part of the investigation, Zaidi added.
“The investigation is 80% complete and the woman has given her cooperation since she was arrested,” he said, noting that a police officer and seven others, including Rela personnel, had also given their statements.
The criminal intimidation offense carries a maximum penalty of two years’ jail and a fine.
