Water woes continue as Negri Sembilan goes bone dry

KL and Selangor aren’t the only places affected by the current dry season and unmanageable consumer demand: Negri Sembilan has found itself in dire straits as well, with water levels at four of the dams serving the state contoinuing to drop.

Syarikat Air Negri Sembilan (Sains) said that the water level at the Sungai Terip dam, which provides water to most parts of Seremban. had fallen to 100.6m. The critical level for the dam is 94.6m.

The Sains report followed with worrying numbers for three other dams: Kelinchi was at 199.5m (critical level 198.3m); Talang at 148.8 (critical level at 140.5m) and Gemenceh at 99.9m (critical at 98m).

On Wednesday, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said that up to 8,000 households in west Seremban were affected by water shortages after levels at Sg Batang Penar fell to dangerous levels.

That situation was brought under control when authorities diverted some 13 million litres of water from the Kuala Sawah treatment plant to the affected Seremban neighbourhoods.

Mohamad said this was possible because the Kuala Sawah plant, which supplies the Port Dickson area, had excess water.

Mohamad also advised the people not to panic.

“Although water rates in Negri Sembilan are among the lowest nationwide, I hope that consumers will not be wasteful as we do not know when it will rain again,” he added.

The Mentri besar also downplayed talk of a looming crisis as the Triang dam and the Ngor-ngoi treatment plant, recently completed at a cost of more than RM750 million, would be commissioned by early next month. The plant, he said, would supply an additional 545 million litres of water a day to the state once full  commissioned.

“Then, we will have excess water which we will be more than happy to sell to other states.”
