Malaysia already has some fair share of non-native folks who’ve assimilated by learning Bahasa Melayu. There’s Ben Bradshaw (shuffle guru), there’s Alex Macleod (PhD dude) and of course, Mat Dan who speaks in thick Terengganu accent.
But what if Japanese, Korean and Chinese folks take on the language? American singer and YouTube personality Joe Inoue recently took this task seriously in his new series, where he speaks various languages in those three accents — to pretty hilarious results. If you’ve ever wondered how Malay proverbs like “Tanam lalang tak akan tumbuh padi” would sound like in an anime episode, well, wonder no more:
