Vivian Lee sentenced to six months jail over ‘bak kut teh’ Ramadan post

The ex-girlfriend of fugitive Alvin Tan Jye Yee was today sentenced to six months in jail for posting on Facebook a Ramadan greeting featuring a ‘bak kut teh’ pork dish three years ago.

Vivian Lee May Ling’s time in jail begins today, The Malay Mail Online’s Ida Lim reported.

In giving out the sentence, Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court judge Abdul Rashid Daud was quoted as saying that he was imposing the jail sentence as a deterrent to others.

“You know that pork is haram (forbidden) for Muslims. Like what the prosecutor said, nasi sudah jadi bubur, even if there was apology, but your actions have injured the feelings of Malaysians,”the portal quoted Abdul Rashid as saying at today’s proceedings.

He did however, reduce the jail term to five months and 22 days after taking into account the eight days Lee spent behind bars in 2013.

The image, dated July 11, 2013, showed Lee, 27, and Tan posing with the pork dish with the words “Selamat Berbuka Puasa (with Bak Kut Teh…fragrant, delicious and appetising)” as well as the halal logo.

Both Lee and Tan — previously known for their explicit sex blog — were charged with the offence. Tan, however, jumped bail and fled to the United States.
