Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin seems hellbent on also being Malaysia’s Minister of Fun Stuff.
Jumping on the worldwide #IceBucketChallenge craze, which was kickstarted to raise awareness and funds for research on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, KJ posted a video on YouTube in which he, yes, doused himself in ice cold water from, yes, a bucket.
He did so at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil while he was carrying out his ministry’s #FitMalaysia campaign, so it wasn’t like he was making any public property unduly wet. So that’s okay.
KJ proceeded to pass on the ice bucket to fellow UMNO pols Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz and Kota Belud MP Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan, and to Malaysian squash hero Datuk Nicol David.
He dedicated his ice bucket drenching to the memory of the late football icon Datuk Mokhtar Dahari, who suffered from a similar motor-neuron disease in his lifetime.
Here’s a tweet with photographic evidence that at least one person on KJ’s hit list – Tourism Minister Nazri Aziz – has taken up the chilly challenge:
