An accident in Kuala Selangor which left one woman dead led to a violent altercation between the driver of the MPV she was trying to avoid and a group of bystanders who hunted him down.
The accident took place at 7.30pm on Friday when Nurjunaidah Ishaq, 36, skidded off the road near Taman Assam Jawa in Kuala Selangor, crashing her Yamaha LC motorcycle into a concrete drain, killing her instantly. The deceased was moving to avoid a Toyota Wish.
The driver of the MPV parked his vehicle ata nearby restaurant and contacted the police to inform them of the accident.
Kuala Selangor CID chief ACP Ramle Bakar told The Rakyat Post‘s Azizi Sunip that a group of Malay men, who were present at the scene of the accident, approached the driver of the Toyota Wish, who is of Chinese descent, at the restaurant, with the exchange devolving into a street brawl soon after.
The resulting riot was captured on video, and uploaded onto YouTube, via the Friends of PDRM account:
Two police patrolcars were dispatched to the scene of the riot to break up the fight and to retrieve the driver from the group of men assaulting him.
As police officers were escorting the driver away from the scene, the crowd surrounding them, which had grown to about 200 people, once again grew unruly and another fight broke out.
“In order to protect the driver, a few policemen were injured as a result of struggling with the men involved,” ACP Ramle said.
Backup was requested from Kuala Selangor police headquarters as the initial two patrol cars had been blocked by the angry crowd.
A 29-year old man, who had recorded the fight on video, was also injured in the altercation, with injuries to his head, elbow, and back, as the group attacking the driver diverted their attention to him.
Police detained a man on Saturday to assist in the investigation on the incident.
The traffic accident is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act, while the riot case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code.
The PDRM has urged members of the public not to act on speculation on social media concerning the event and further exacerbate racial tensions surrounding the incident.
