Vet officer sentenced to eight months in jail for hitting wife

A man who hit his wife in a hospital elevator three years ago was sentenced to eight months in jail and fined RM2,000 at the Bukit Mertajam magistrate’s court.

Free Malaysia Today’s Predeep Nambiar reports that veterinary officer Mohammad Affandi Ismail, 39, was found guilty of voluntarily causing harm to his first wife Siti Khadijah Ahmad Ramli, 40, a factory worker.

According to FMT, magistrate Mohd Fitri Sadardin pointed out that the defence failed to raise reasonable doubt against the prosecution’s case.

“It is not right to slap your wife. You have done that in front of your own children, which is also unacceptable,” he reportedly said in meting out the sentence.

The incident happened on Aug 12, 2013 at the KPJ Hospital in Bandar Perda, and a video of what happened went viral on YouTube and social media soon after.

The Star Online, meanwhile, reports that the couple is in the midst of a divorce and that Mohammad Affandi appeared to be ‘in a jovial mood outside the courtroom’.

The news site quoted mother of three Siti Khadijah as saying that the whole episode — which happened in front of the couple’s children — had caused her to suffer from trauma.

“It caused me to feel threatened and to be in fear, and made me feel ashamed. My head was also swollen after being hit,” she reportedly said in court.
