V Shem-Wee Kiong cement world number one ranking by winning the World Superseries Finals

If there were any doubts why Malaysian men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong deserve to be world number one, they put an end to it on Sunday.

The doubles pair ended their year in spectacular fashion when they beat Japan’s Takeshi Kamura-Keigo Sonoda to lift the World Superseries Finals crown.

According to The Star Online, the pair took 40 minutes to defeat the Japanese pair 21-14, 21-19 in the season-ending tournament held at the Hamdan Sports Complex in Dubai.

For their hard work, the Olympics silver medalists will return home with a US$84,000 (RM376,000) prize money.

V Shem-Wee Kiong became only the second Malaysian doubles pair to win at the Finals, after Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong emerged as champions in 2008.

The World Superseries Finals was their third title this year, having won the the Syed Modi International in India in January and the Denmark Open in October.
