Is it just a fact of life in Genting Highlands that the machines you want money from will invariably take it from you instead?
The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has found four skimming devices fitted to four automated teller machines (ATMs) in Genting Highlands since February.
Pahang Commercil CID chief Supt Azizan Md Isa said the devices, fitted into the ATMs’ card slot mechanism, were designed to steal the bank card data of people who made transactions with the compromised ATMs. Other tha the skimming devices, each of the four ATMs was also monitored by a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera believed to have been installed and used by a syndicate.
“The latest case was detected at 4pm on Aug 7, while the other three cases were detected in February, May and June.
“Initial investigation found that the syndicate had fitted the skimming devices and installed wireless CCTV cameras to the machines to steal users’ pin numbers and card data before making fake ATM cards to withdraw money,” The Star Online reports him as saying.
Police believe the syndicate had been targeting tourists and foreigners with the skimming devices, as their bank cards were easy to forge.
“We cannot confirm when the devices and cameras were installed. So far, we have yet to receive any report on missing money in Genting Highlands,” he said.
He advised banks to run regular checks to ensure that no unauthorised devices were fitted to ATMs.
