UPSR: Affected pupils to be offered counselling

After having the dubious honour of announcing two more leaks to the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) yesterday, Education director-general Dr Khair Mohamad Yusof said affected pupils will be offered counselling.

Khair, quoted by the New Straits Times, said he understood the anxiety and difficulty faced by Year Six pupils, their parents as well as teachers.

“I would like to apologise for what had happened,” he was quoted as saying.

Yesterday the ministry revealed that two more papers – Tamil language and Mathematics – had been leaked in addition to the Science and English papers two weeks ago.

According to the report, over 470,000 pupils will be forced to retake the Maths paper while some 16,700 pupils will re-sit the Tamil paper on Oct 9.

“The Malaysian Examination Board has confirmed on Sept 21 that Mathematics 015/1 (SK), 025/1 (SJKC), 035/1 (SJKT) and Tamil Language 036 and 037 had been leaked.”

“Due to the leak, the papers which the pupils sat on Sept 10 were void,” Khair said yesterday.

Khair said that he had taken over supervision of public examinations from the moment the first leak was reported two weeks ago.

“As immediate measures, I have transferred some MEB officers in our efforts to strengthen the management and handling of public examinations.”

“I have also taken precautionary measures, including tightening the security in the handling of the examination papers from MEB to exam centres nationwide,” he was quoted as saying.
