Tragic news from an Ampang-area gym this week: an art student training there was killed when a weight he was lifting fell on him Tuesday evening.
Ong Chong Jin, 20, was attempting to lift a 110kg barbell when it fell, presumably crushing his throat, killing him at approximately 7:45pm.
Prior to the accident, he had been training with friends at the Taman Melwati gym; however, when the incident occurred, his buddies has either stepped out to pray or have a smoke. When they returned, they found Ong unconscious, lying on his back, and with a barbell lodged on his neck.
While some of his friends removed the weight, others attempted to perform CPR while an ambulance arrived. Unfortunately, they were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead.
A tragic picture of a fitness enthusiast soon emerged – Ong had lost nearly 20kg by discovering a love for training, and spent hours there with friends, getting fit.

The Malaysian Institute of Art student also worked as a part-time real estate agent, to make extra money.
His tragic passing is being treated by police as “sudden death.”
Fitness lovers, please be careful. Wait for your gym buddies before you attempt to lift heavy weights. They are not just there to encourage you, but could save your life.
