Ex-deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin and former Kedah mentri besar Mukhriz Mahathir have been sacked from Umno.
The Star Online reports that the decision was made by the party supreme council today, on the grounds that the two former leaders had shared the same stage with the Opposition.
Party president and prime minister Najib Razak was quoted as saying that the decision was unanimous.
Quoted further, Najib said the the supreme council would urge the government to cut funding — as well as reduce the number of personnel — to the Perdana Global Foundation, currently led by former premier and Najib critic, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
He reportedly said that this was due to the foundation having been used ‘in an attempt to bring down the government in an unconstitutional manner’.
In Feb, Umno voted to suspend Muhyiddin as its deputy president, months after he was sacked from his job of deputy prime minister for openly questioning Najib over alleged financial scandal involving 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
Mukhriz announced his resignation as Kedah MB on Feb 6, after he was informed that he had lost the support of the majority in the state legislative assembly.
Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, Kedah Umno deputy chairman, was subsequently appointed as Mukhriz’s replacement, after successfully leading the attack against the former MB.
