UKM remains in world rankings of top young universities

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) – the country’s second-oldest uni – was once again included in a worldwide list of best “young” universities, although this year it did slip down a rung.

Quacquarelli Symonds’ (QS) “Top 50 Under 50” survey, part of the QS World University Rankings 2014/15, placed UKM at the 20th position in the world among universities 50 years old or younger, down from its 19th spot last year.

It was the only Malaysian university to make it onto the list.

Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU), ranked second last year, came out first on this year’s survey, beating the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Rounding out the top five varsities were the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KASIT), Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) and the City University of Hong Kong.

“The dynamic nature of this ranking makes it an interesting comparison with our global and regional rankings.

“By focusing on the performance of these younger institutions alone, the list aims to spot the up-and-coming higher education powerhouses in the global arena,” said QS head of research Ben Sowter, as reported by The Malay Mail Online

The overall QS Rankings grades a total of 863 institutions of higher learning around the world, out of more than 3,000 thousand the group assesses. The rankings are considered one of the world’s leading benchmarks for quality universities.
