The UK car blogger HubNut, aka Ian Seabrook, has given what appear to be two thumbs up to a 1987 Proton Saga Aeroback that he bought for RM280 (US$65), calling it “very competent.”
The comment is world’s away from anything hyperbolic, but significantly better than the TopGear episode where Jeremy Clarkson surmized a Kelisa as something that was “designed by not one man, whom wanted to make a great car, but by a corporation that simply wanted to make money.” And then he annihilated it with a sledgehammer out of frustration.
We’ll take competent, thank you.
Seabrook described the car as “rather jolly to drive,” and “is a good steer too.”
“As a car to simply jump in and drive, it’s exactly what most people want… It isn’t thrilling, it isn’t fancy, it’s just very competent. I like that.”
There you have it Malaysians: an ’87 Proton. Un-thrilling, un-fancy, but competent. The 98 Degrees of cars, if you will.
