In a move that has shocked absolutely no one, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has officially endorsed its president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail for the post of Selangor Menteri Besar – a rather surreal turn of events, since Selangor already has a PKR Menteri Besar in Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.
PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil told The Star Online that details of the party’s new official stand on who should be Selangor’s top elected official will only be discussed at the Pakatan Rakyat’s Presidential Council tomorrow, and will be revealed to the public later.
Khalid’s hold on the MB post has been a strenuous one for nearly a year, with attacks on his authority coming mostly from his own party, in the form of veiled challenges by PKR vice president Azmin Ali, and open censures by Pakatan Rakyat de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Kajang by-election held earlier this year was itself seen as a transparent manoeuvre by PKR top brass to insert Anwar into the Selangor state assembly, thus making him eligible to become Menteri Besar. When his sodomy aquittal was overturned by the courts, the party hastily replaced Anwar with his wife Wan Azizah, who won the by-election.
