Take note, Sarawakian youth: your life is in danger.
According to the 2015 National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS), the obesity rate among youth aged 18 and above in the state is reportedly on the rise, with 18.4 per cent of them categorised as obese and 30.1 per cent overweight.
The trend is exceptionally worrying as the obesity rate is slightly higher compared to the national level, which recorded a 17.7 per cent obesity rate and 30 per cent categorised as overweight.
Bernama reports that the survey – conducted by the Institute for Public Health – also found that two other non-communicable diseases (NCD), hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, were higher in Sarawak compared to the rest of the country.
Those suffering from hypertension stood at 37.3 per cent (compared to the national record of 47.7 per cent) and a total of 48.6 per cent suffer from hypercholesterolemia (national record stands at 30.3 per cent).
However, there is some good news (we don’t know if we can call it that) as 14.8 per cent of Sarawakian youth suffer from diabetes, which is lower than the national record of 17.5 per cent.
We really don’t want to sound like your mother, but please exercise more and watch what you eat.
