Typo/Freudian Slip of the Day: Astro Awani reports #BERSIH4 raised “more than RM2.6 billion” in donations

Donations: not everyone manages to raise them effectively, but when they do, they tend to raise the same mysterious amount.

An Astro Awani report published today probably mixed up one hotly-discussed donation drive with another, when it claimed that Bersih 2.0, organisers of the recent #BERSIH4 mass rally in KL, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu, had raised “more than RM2.6 billion” in donations.

Uh. That might be another donation. For someone else. From a friendly Middle Eastern donor. We’re just saying.

Reading the actual article reveals that the headline was indeed a mistake, as Bersih 2.0 steering committee member Masjaliza Hamzah was quoted as revealing the electoral reform movement had raised RM2,064,652.74 from about 27,000 donors in the run-up to #BERSIH4.

Bersih 2.0 had also generated RM553, 914 from the sale of official t-shirts and another RM28, 795 from muffler scarf sales, bringing the total up to RM2,647,361.74.

That’s RM2.6 million. Not billion.

Prime Minister Najib Razak can probably rest easy – he still holds the crown as the country’s most effective fundraiser.
