Two suspected Anonymous Malaysia members detained in Ops Topeng

Two individuals suspected of being members of local hacktivist movement Anonymous Malaysia were remanded by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) fro attempting to launch cyberattacks agains the Malaysian Government.

The two suspects, aged 19 and 24, were hailed up from Port Klang and Gopeng, in a Ops Topeng raid.

Deputy Director JSJK (Cyber and Multimedia Investigation) Bukit Aman, Senior Assistant Commissioner Kamarudin Md Din said that the individuals were identified with cooperation from the Cyber Security Malaysia and MCMC, LowYat.net reports.

A video was released online by individuals claiming to represent Anonymous Malaysia early last month, threatening to conduct an “all-out war” on websites belonging to the Federal Government, Prime Minister Najib Razak, and scandal-ridden sovereign fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), to be carried out in conjunction with last week’s mammoth #BERSIH4 rally.

#BERSIH4 organisers Bersih 2.0 disavowed any connection to Anonymous Malaysia, and urged Malaysian law enforcement to act decisively on any online terror threats.

Since then, Anonymous Malaysia seemed to have splintered into two distinct factions, with one, Anonymous Malaysia Team – which the two apprehended suspects are believed to have belonged to – advocating direct interference in public affairs to affect social change.

No cyberattacks were recorded during the 34-hour period last weekend when #BERSIH4 was taking place.
