Kuala Lumpur’s annual Standard Charter Marathon confirmed yesterday via their social media account that two runners were indeed injured during the event, after being hit by a car along the route.

Barricades had been set up in and around Kuala Lumpur to ensure runner safety; however, race organizers are now claiming that a car “plowed through our safety barriers.” They added that the injured runners are receiving on-going medical treatment, though the nature of their injuries was not disclosed. The driver of the vehicle did not stop following the accident, and left the scene.
They added that they were cooperating with authorities in the investigations, and will give a lengthier statement after more details surrounding the accident are established.

Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq has weighed in on the incident, confirming that he was informed of the hit and run and “hopes the authorities will take swift action in finding the wrongdoer [who] broke through the safety barriers.”
He concluded that the priorities laid in ensuring “the safety of the rakyat (people).”
Eye-witnesses say that a vehicle struck participants along Kuala Lumpur’s MRR2 road, going towards Gombak to the north of the city. Many areas of the road are currently under construction, and it is unclear if the driver became confused by the various barriers and dividers set up throughout the road.

Social media users are claiming to know the license plate of the driver, but this information has yet to be confirmed by investigators.
Thirty-thousand participants ran in this year’s KL Marathon, in sundry categories including 5km, ten, half and full distance, with 1,900 tourists joining in the event from 73 different nations.
