Two policemen from Penang held over human trafficking

Two policemen, believed to have been involved in people smuggling activities at the border, have been arrested.

Both officers are from Penang, the New Straits Times reports, quoting Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar who denied that 12 officers had been arrested, as claimed by several blogs.

“Some blogs have reported that 12 police officers were arrested in relation to the Wang Kelian human smuggling camps. That is incorrect. It is just two police officers. I would like to reiterate that they are suspects and are being investigated,” the NST quoted him as saying.

Human rights activist group Tenaganita reportedly said today that Malaysian authorities at the borders have long been conspiring with human traffickers with reports coming out as early as 2007.

Its director Glorene Dass said that several police reports made by family members of missing Rohingya refugees were not acted upon and that members of the police force as well as immigration officials were involved in the cross-border crime.

More worryingly, Dass had revealed that similar camps existed in other parts of the country as well, including Perak, Pahang, Kedah and Penang.
