Two Malaysian women busted in Japan smuggling meth in underwear

Reports have emerged that two Malaysian women have been arrested by Japanese authorities under suspicion of having smuggled drugs into the country at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport last week.

Bukit Aman police headquarters says that the while they are awaiting further details, they do know that the two women are in their 20s, and are accused of smuggling 1.5kg of methamphetamine into the country. They are in contact with the women and their Japanese counterparts.

Local reports from Tokyo say that the two women were taken in by police and customs officials after the drugs were found nestled in their knickers, bras and sanitary pads. The two, co-workers at a Kuala Lumpur hotel, were reported to have been acting strangely, prompting customs to take them aside for further inspection.

Their panty haul is reported to have a street value of RM3.3million (US$800,000), and Japanese media has stated that each woman was wearing three layers of underwear.

The two left KLIA airport on 30 June for Haneda on short stay visas.

Japan drug laws are incredibly stringent, with mandatory imprisonment for those busted in possession. Suspects can expect to be held in solitary confinement, without the luxury of visitors or correspondences barring their lawyer until their first hearing, which may come over a year after their initial arrest.

Don’t do drugs. Don’t smuggle drugs. Especially don’t do both, in Japan.
