Two delivery riders sentenced to three years in jail for robbing RM65 from a convenience store.

Two delivery riders were sentenced to three years in prison and a stroke of the cane yesterday for robbing a convenience store of RM65 (US$14.50) on August 18.

Nazir Bahli, 36, and Ahmad Shahmi Azmi, 31, were reported to be friends. They both pleaded guilty to gang robbery at a store in Taman Pertama, Cheras.

They were accused of raiding the cash register and grabbing RM65 when paying for a drink.

They entered the convenience store at 9.30 p.m. that day while each was sporting a white and black t-shirt, according to the case’s facts.

One of them approached the cashier and started a conversation, while the other went to get a bottled drink and make a payment.

But when the cashier was returning their balance, they broke into the register and stole RM65 in cash, then made off on a motorcycle.

Nazir told Judge Emilia Kaswati Mohamad Khalid that the robbery was done out of desperation when she asked how he could commit such an act.

Emilia continued by pointing out that foreign workers in the country put in a lot of effort to earn money to send to their families back home.

Emelia: How could you say you are desperate? Do you have the heart to feed your wife and kids with such money?

Nazir: No, ma’am.

Emelia: Now, who is in trouble?

Nazir: Me and my family, ma’am… and my friends.

Emelia Kaswati: How old are you?

Mohd Nazir: 36

Emelia: Four more years and you’ll be 40 years old. If you were 16 years old, I would’ve understood that you (could) be young and couldn’t think straight. But you’re 36 years old.

Police say that Nazir and Shahmi planned and carried out six robberies and stole a total of RM1,696.85 in Cheras on August 18.

They allegedly committed the crime at six different places on the same day.

Both were charged with six counts of the same crime, under Section 395 of the Penal Code, at four courts.

Nazir and Shahmi pleaded guilty to one charge before Emelia and two charges before Sessions Court judge Siti Aminah Ghazali.

Siti Aminah ordered no bail and set September 26 for sentencing.

However, the duo also claimed trial on one charge before Sessions judge Isralizam Sanusi, and two charges before Sessions judge Hamidah Mohamed Deril.

Isralizam ordered RM10,000 bail for each of the accused, and fixed Sept 26 for case mention, while Hamidah ordered RM8,000 bail for each of the accused, and fixed Oct 5 for case mention.
