Fire and Rescue were called to an entertainment venue in the city of Ipoh in the early hours of this morning after a blaze broke out on the building’s fourth floor. “Entertainment venue” is a generic term often used to describe a variety of nightlife spots ranging from karaoke bars, to lounges, to clubs. Early reports have not specified what the venue was being used for.

Ipoh is located three hours drive from Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur.

Officials received the call at 5:49am, and promptly went to the scene, a Times Square outlet on the city’s Jalan Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah. Local media outlet Berita Harian reports that two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, with another being taken to hospital for treatment.

Both of the deceased, identified as 36-year-old Tai Chee Kin, and 37-year-old Lau Wai Hoong, are believed to have died of smoke inhalation. Fire and Rescue reported earlier that “initial information showed that there were ten victims” involved in the incident. Currently, firefighters are searching for any more trapped individuals.

Once operations are complete, they will have a press conference to announce their findings.
