Two cousins electrocuted in recycling shop fire

Two cousins lost their lives when they were electrocuted at a recycling shop they owned in Jalan Bagan Lalang, Butterworth on Monday.

According to The Star Online, the two men – Koi Kok Leng, 35 and Koi Ang Leng, 37 – reportedly died at the scene when they were electrocuted after they failed to escape from the fire, which involved electrical cables.

The Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson Mohd Azman Hussin told the news portal that they received a distress call at 9.30pm, and seven firemen were dispatched to the scene.

Mohd Azman said that when the firemen arrived at the scene 11 minutes later, they had difficulties removing the victims as there were electrical cables on the floor and water surrounding them.

“We were not sure if the wires were still ‘live’ so we waited for personnel from Tenaga Nasional Berhad to turn up.

“When TNB men gave the all-clear sign, we examined the victims with the help of paramedics at 10pm and found that they died at the scene,” Mohd Azman was quoted as saying.

Mohd Azman added that the case has been handed over to the police for further investigation.
