Two arrested, 27 foreigners rescued as police foil human trafficking ring

A Malaysian man and  Thai woman have reportedly been arrested in Kodiang, Kedah on suspicion smuggling people into the country.

The New Straits Times reported that 27 Myanmar nationals, including two children were rescued in an operation by federal police from Bukit Aman and Kedah police following an investigation by the Bukit Aman’s Border Intelligence Unit.

“An operation was carried out at 11pm on Tuesday until 11am this morning to curb human smuggling activities across the border,” state CID chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Mohd Nashir Ya was quoted as saying.

“During the operation, an unnumbered house at Kampung Padang Chik, Padang Sera in Kodiang was raided,” he was quoted further.

The victims found in the house — among them three women and two boys —were aged between three and 55.

Mood Nashir said further that the house, which was rented and managed by the Thai woman, was being used as a transit point before the victims were sent to various parts of the country.

The man, he added, had been the driver.

“We also seized a car believed to be used to ferry the illegal immigrants,” he said.
