Transport Minister: unpopular AES cameras reduce accident fatalities

The unpopular (and once controversial) Automatic Enforcement System (AES) cameras, used to monitor and track traffic offenders, have proven to be effective in reducing accident fatalities and increase drivers’ compliance with the law, says Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai.

In a written reply delivered in Parliament today, Liow said that in 14 locations where AES cameras had been installed, the number of accident fatalities fell from 19 in the eight months before implementation to 12 in the eight months since the cameras were installed.

“This means that AES managed to reduce seven accident fatalities or 36.84 per cent for only eight months,” he said, as quoted by Astro Awani.

His remarks were in response to a query by Kuala Kedah MP Dr Azman Ismail of PKR.

Liow added that data compiled by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) also showed that compliance with mandated speed limits on working days on six stretches of road outfitted with AES cameras jumped to 91%, compared to 63% before the cameras were installed.

“For four AES fixed cameras in traffic light junctions, the rate of non compliance before AES implementation was 4.3 per cent, which was reduced to 2.2 per cent after implementation,” he said.

Until April this year, the AES cameras have led to a total of 264,750 summonses being paid by traffic offenders, with fines amounting to a staggering RM76.65 million.
