Transboundary haze expected in Malaysia next month

The haze is coming. Again.

This time however, it’s not because of local fires triggered by the El Nino phenomenon — it is transboundary haze, due to hot and dry weather in Sumatra and Kalimantan in Indonesia.

This is expected to begin sometime next month and last until October, the New Straits Times’ Fazleena Aziz reports

Natural Resources and Environment Datuk Seri Wan Dr Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar was quoted as saying that the haze would most likely be ‘moderate’, in part due to the La Nina phenomenon — set to bring heavy rain — happening around the same period.

“Based on research by the Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) in Singapore, the La Nina phenomenon may cause floods in some areas in Malaysia including Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang,” he said.

Last month, several parts of the country experienced deteriorating air quality due to several peat fires triggered by the El Nino-inflicted hot and dry weather.
