A tourist from China reportedly drowned at the Pulau Payar sea park in Langkawi Island yesterday, while swimming in the area.
According to the New Straits Times, family members of Hong Leung, 74, from Guangdong, China found him floating where he had been swimming at 12.30pm.
Police received a distress call at 2.35pm, Langkawi district police chief Superintendent Dr Che Ghazali Che Awang told the daily, adding that the family had arrived at the island at 11.40am.
“Initial investigations found that the victim and his family had arrived at the island about 11.40am, and as they were getting ready to leave, they found Hong missing,” he was quoted as saying.
”After searching in the area, they found him floating at the surface. He was then brought onto land, given emergency treatment before being transported by boat to the Kuah jetty,” he told the NST.
Hong was reportedly wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident. He was pronounced dead by a medical officer at the Langkawi hospital, Che Ghazali added.
