2016 has clearly been Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong’s year.
After bringing home a silver medal at this year’s Olympic Games, the badminton doubles pair has another achievement to celebrate: being the world’s top ranked pair!
According to The New Straits Times, V Shem and Wee Kiong officially moved up the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings on Thursday after South Korea’s formidable pair of Lee Yong Dae-Yoo Yeon Seong were removed from the list, after the 28-year-old Yong Dae announced his retirement.
The clearly estatic V Shem celebrated the achievement by posting a photo on his Instagram page with a straight forward caption ‘World No.1’:
V Shem told the NST that both he and Wee Kiong did not expect to climb to the top so fast.
“We were hoping to end the year on a high, but I did not expect it to happen this soon, especially since we still have the China and Hong Kong Opens to play in.
“As for now, Wee Kiong and I will remain focused on maintaining our consistency and continue to give our best,” the 27-year-old was quoted as saying.
The pair was two points away from winning Malaysia’s first ever Olympics gold medal back in August, but they ultimately lost to China’s Fu Haifeng-Zhang Nan in the final.
