The long arm of the law came down hard, and swift, for a 25-year-old college student, who was captured driving directly into an on-duty traffic policeman earlier this week.
A Kuala Lumpur Magistrates court judge meted out a three-month sentence, along with an RM5,000 (US$1,250) fine to Tan Wooi Zhan, of Ipoh, who committed the offence at 8am, on April 2 at an intersection near Dataran Merdeka. He has also had his license suspended for three years.
Representing himself, Tan asked the judge for leniency, as he faced a potential five-year imprisonment, along with a fine that could go as high as RM15,000 (US$3,675).
He added that another car had swerved into his lane, causing him to collide with the officer.
Prosecutors asked for a fair sentence, to deter reckless driving, and remind others to be vigilant on the road.
A CCTV clip of the incident made the rounds on social media this week, with the 22-year-old officer sustaining leg injuries that were treated at a nearby hospital.
