And they lived happily ever … you know what, maybe not so much. According to newly-released statistics, in 2012 there were a staggering 56,760 divorces filed in Malaysia, coming to around one divorce every 10 minutes.

The Syariah Judiciary Department (JKSM) revealed that among Muslim couples, the number of divorces rose 2.3 times from 20,916 in 2004 to 47,740 in 2012 … and 49,311 last year. This puts Muslim divorces at a disproportionate 84 per cent of the total number of divorces recorded in 2012.

Non-Muslim divorces rose at a slightly higher rate, however. From 3.291 divorces in 2004, numbers rose 2.7 times to 9,020 divorces in 2012, according to the Statistics Department.

While divorces might be on the rise, marriages are also increasing in number. In 2004, 112,262 Muslim couples tied the knot in Malaysia. In 2012, that number grew steadily to 148,806. Non-Muslim marriages fluctuated in number, with 57,530 couples getting married in 2004, with declines and increases in between that year and 2012’s 65,993 marriages.
