Thailand asks Malaysia to help trace bomb suspect

The Thailand police have confirmed that they are working closely with the Malaysian police after it was alleged that a Malaysian mobile phone was used to detonate a bomb in the country a couple of days ago.

Thailand’s police chief Gen Chakthip Chaijinda told Bernama that the Malaysian authorities have been very cooperative.

“We have contacted our (Malaysian) counterparts on the matter and have received good cooperation from them (Malaysian police),” he was quoted by the news agency as saying.

According to a media report in Thailand, one of the mobile phones used to detonate a bomb in Southern Thailand recently was reportedly imprinted with a Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s (MCMC) serial number.

The report also claimed that the mobile phone, reportedly recovered from one of the blast sites in Phuket, originated from Malaysia.

Chakthip told reporters that the Thai police had handed over the phone’s serial number to the Malaysian police so that they could start tracing the owner of the device.

In a statement cited by news site Al-Jazeera, the MCMC said it would work closely with the Thai authorities to help find the bomb suspect.

Last Thursday and Friday, a series of bomb attacks ripped through several resort areas in Thailand, killing at least four people and injuring 35 others.
