A teenager in Sarawak was offered RM250 to convert to Islam, her parents claim

A 13-year old Form One student in Miri was allegedly offered RM250 in exchange for her conversion to Islam, her parents claim.

The couple, who are of the Christian faith, said that certain teachers transferred to Sarawak from Peninsular Malaysia have been enticing their non-Muslim students to convert with the promise of cash rewards.

The Star Online reports that according to the couple, their daughter was approached by two of her teachers and several other individuals and was offered RM250 in exchange for her reciting a few Muslim prayers and putting on Islamic attire.

Would she have done so, the girl would have been taken to the local Islamic Department for registration as a Muslim.

The parents lodged a police report on the incident on March 25.

The issue was aired at a press conference organised with the help of the Miri PKR office, and was attended by representatives of several Iban NGOs.

“We were told that the teachers are from Kelantan and they were posted here by the Education Ministry,” claimed the father of the girl.
