A picnic trip for six friends to a waterfall in Selayang yesterday turned tragic when one of them drowned after reportedly deciding to swim a little longer than her friends.
The New Straits Times reported that the victim, V. Harihanan, 18, from Taman Fadason, Kepong, had gone to the Hutan Lipur Bukit Lagong waterfall with five of her friends at 3pm.
“After almost two hours of swimming, the girl’s friends decided they had enough and prepared to go home,” Gombak police chief Assistant Commissioner Ali Ahmad told the daily.
“However, Harihanan decided to swim some more and jumped into the water. However, when she failed to surface, her friends screamed for help,” he was quoted further.
Several members of the public reportedly retrieved her body. Her remains were taken to the Selayang Hospital.
