Teacher’s image of student eating on floor after parents take up cafeteria seats goes viral

Mohd Fadli Salleh, an elementary school teacher in the Gombak area, has made headlines after a post he uploaded to Facebook on Wednesday went viral.

The image of a boy squatting in a corner because there was no room at the school’s cafeteria tables struck a chord with netizens. Fadli pointed out that the lack of space had nothing to do with the number of students, but because parents were taking up the bulk of the seats.

When contacted by mStar he told them: “It is not for parents to sit down and tend to their own children, depriving other students of the space.”

He added that parents had been previously told at orientations that they were not to sit down while accompanying their kids at lunch, as it would displace other students.

“Some schools give parents permission to accompany their children at the beginning of the school term, including spending break time with them,” he said. He explained that some children might not be used to buying food, nor know how to calculate the cost and the change to be received.

Sir, we think that’s called maths, but don’t ask us – we went to art school.

More than one pupil had been forced to eat their meal on the floor since students had returned to school.

Fadli asked parents to imagine that it was their children who were forced to eat uncomfortably, crouched in a corner. It’s called empathy people, and we could all use some in 2018.

The most important lessons in life: not in the classroom, but in how you treat other people.
