Taxis seen blocking path of ambulance rushing to accident scene

The rules have been made tighter; abuse the emergency lane and you’ll be hauled to court.

But it seems that the memo hasn’t reached everyone. A video showing several taxis blocking the path of an ambulance — despite the ambulance using a loudspeaker to notify motorists —  has spread across Facebook.

The four-minute long video uploaded by Facebook user Muhd Azul — reportedly a medic at the Putrajaya Hospital — showed four cabs blocking the way as an ambulance rushed to the scene on an accident involving two lorries and two cars at Km28.6, from Putrajaya to KLIA.

The taxis could not get out of the way because the accident had caused a 7km crawl on the Elite Highway, and this caused the ambulance to be delayed even further.

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) had announced last month that it found compounds to be ineffective in deterring the misuse of the emergency lane. Therefore, authorities are now dragging to court those caught committing the offence.

Anyone found guilty would be jailed no more than one year or fined up to RM2,000.
