Taxi fares expected to increase by 40 percent

Taxi charges are reportedly set to swell by up to 40 percent as the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) prepares to unveil a new structure for cab fares.

The Malay Mail, quoting industry sources, reports that the hike will cover flag-down fares, distance and time charges.

“After months of rigorous discussions with stakeholders, the government has agreed to set a new rate for distance and time charge with a 40 per cent increase than the current fares,” the daily quoted a source as saying.

These new rates will apply to all taxis in Klang Valley, Penang and Johor Baru.

According to the report, new flag-down fares range from RM3.30 to RM4.30 for budget cabs, Teksi 1 Malaysia (TEKS1M) and budget cabs in Penang. Charges for every kilometre will be at RM1.25
