Tailor loses home and business in Ampang fire

A tailor in the midst of busy Hari Raya deadline season lost her home and business, and the dresses she made for her clients, in a fire that razed her shop and six other houses at Lorong Kalan Ikan Emas 22, Kampung Ampang Campuran at 10am yesterday.

Known as Kak Nur, the 53-year old tailor said hundreds of dresses she was preparing for clients in time for Hari Raya and her personal belongings worth around RM30,000 were lost in the fire.

“I and my son Asnul Faizal Muhd Nasir, 29, were packing dresses that were ready to be send to Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, when we heard a loud explosion near a factory and saw fire,” she recounted to Bernama.

“I managed to grab some important documents before escaping.”

Asnul said a plastics factory had started operations last month, near the squatter settlement in which they had been living for the past 32 years.

“Our main source of income is through tailoring. We had seven sewing machines but unfortunately all were destroyed in the fire,” he said.

Following the fire, Lembah Jaya (Ampang) Selangor state assemblyman Khasim Abdul Aziz of PAS said the 42 people who lost their homes the fire would be temporarily housed at Dewan Nusa Bakti, Ampang.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations deputy director Mohd Sani Harul said the final tally of the fire destroyed seven houses, a surau and a factory. Investigations ino its cause are still underway.
