Police opened fire on a group of men suspected to be robbers in Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh on Wednesday night, and one suspect was shot in the leg.
The men were fired upon as they were allegedly trying to attack police officers while in a stolen car.
The group of five men, two on a motorcycle and three in a car, were in the Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh area when a 12-man police team took notice of them.
Sungai Buloh district chief Supt Junaidi Bujang said the patrol saw the men acting suspiciously and decided to tail them. The two men on motorcycle were pulled over and arrested without incident.
“Upon reaching Jalan 1D/3 in the housing estate, the driver of the car suddenly reversed and tried to ram into the police personnel who were following them but instead hit a parked car,” The Malay Mail Online reports Junaidi as saying. Several of the police officers proceeded to overtake the car.
“The driver accelerated and tried to hit the police in front, but missed and sped on.
“Three shots were fired at the car, hitting its rear tyre and body, causing the driver to lose control and it skidded,” Junaidi said.
Two of the suspects exited the car and fled, while the third charged at a police officer while seeming to pull a weapon out from his sling bag. The police officer he attempted to attack shot him in the leg.
“Checks on the car revealed that it was using fake plates and had been stolen in Saujana Utama here last week,” Junaidi said.
He said the injured man, who was sent to the Sungai Buloh Hospital, had a record for assault.
The duo on the motorcycle had no criminal record.
