Surprise, surprise! Malaysia has the second highest English proficiency in Asia

Much has been said about our proficiency in the English language, but guess what; it turns out that Malaysia has one of the highest English proficiency rate in the whole of Asia.

In fact, according to the latest survey by the EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) as cited by The New Straits Times, Malaysia was ranked second among Asian countries on this year’s list.

The only country with a higher English proficiency in Asia is — no surprises here — our neighbour, Singapore.

On a global scale, Malaysia was ranked 14th out of 70 countries in English proficiency while Singapore came in at 12th place.

Also, to top it all off, Malaysia, Singapore and Argentina were the only non-European countries to make Top 15 in the annual survey.

Notably missing from the list was the Philippines, which, according to the EF EPI, have already developed an advanced English language proficiency.

Oh, in case you were wondering, Sweden topped this year’s list, with Netherlands and Denmark coming in second and third place respectively.

The EF EPI is an annual list that attempts to rank countries based on the average level of English language skills amongst adults.
