The Sultan of Selangor has revoked Anwar Ibrahim’s Datuk Seri title

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor has revoked the title of Datuk Seri conferred to Federal Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim in 1992.

The Selangor Royal Palace put out a statement this morning explaining that the decision to strip Anwar of his title was because the de facto PKR leader had “repeatedly questioned the integrity of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and the royal institution in the recent Mentri Besar crisis.”

Anwar can no longer lay claim to the title of Datuk Seri as granted to him by the Sultan of Selangor effective November 3.

Sultan Sharafuddin’s private secretary Mohamad Munir Bani told The Star Online‘s Akil Yunus, “The Sultan, after consulting with the Selangor Royal Council, has decided that the honorary award which carries the title ‘Datuk Seri’ to Anwar Ibrahim, be revoked effective Nov 3, in line with the Sultan’s powers to confer the said titles as enshrined in the state’s constitution.

“The decision is based on Anwar’s repeated questioning of the integrity of the Selangor Sultan and royal institution in resolving the Selangor MB crisis, as well as his questioning of issues related to Islam.”

He added that Anwar’s actions and behaviour demonstrated that he was no longer deserving of the title previously conferred to him.
