A group of student activists stood outside the gates of Istana Negara on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim yesterday hoping to deliver a petition seeking the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s royal pardon for jailed Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
The student leaders, led by Persatua Mahasiswa Universiti Malaya (PMUM) president Ammar Atan, said their petition was an appeal to DYMM Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah’s mercy and fo His Royal Highness to deliver justice in Anwar’s case.
Anwar had an earlier conviction and five-year prison sentence upheld by the Federal Court in Putrajaya on February 10. He is currently serving out his sentence in Sungai Buloh Prison.
Ammar added that the reason his group filed the petition was because of the “politcal” nature of Anwar’s imprisonment, the Federal Government’s attempt to stifle the voice of the Opposition leader, to stem the rising international condemnation of his imprisonment, and to overcome the political persecution levelled against the former Deputy Prime Minister.
The petition was signed by 26 student leaders, representing students’ associations from across the country.
“We accept that the court’s decision was final, however His Highness Yang di-Pertuan Agong is the top crown of country and the umbrella of justice,” he told Astro Awani‘s Mariah Ahmad.
