Student drowns while swimming in Teluk Bidara

What was supposed to be a fun day out at the beach with a group of friends turned tragic when a 21-year-old polytechnic student drowned while taking a swim.

According to The New Straits Times, 15 students from Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Polytechnic were swimming in Teluk Bidara at 6pm on Wednesday when Muhammad Nawi Musa — a second year mechanical engineering student — and a classmate, 20-year-old Barathratnam Bala Subramanim, were swept away by waves.

Two students managed to pull the struggling Barathratnam to safety, but Muhammad Nawi reportedly disappeared into the water.

District Fire and Rescue Station chief Amri Mohamad told the daily that six rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene after one of the students alerted the station.

After a brief search and rescue mission, the victim’s body was reportedly found at 7pm.
