The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) reported that a powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale occurred in North Sumatra, Indonesia, at 10:59 pm yesterday.

The earthquake struck 84 kilometres (km) southwest of Padang Sidempuan, Indonesia, according to MetMalaysia director-general Muhammad Helmi Abdullah.

Perak, Selangor, the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor, he said, may all experience tremors.

“However, there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department (JPBM) confirmed receiving a call about tremors felt by a Pudu Impian 1 Apartment resident on Jalan Cheras.

According to a JPBM KL spokesperson, a fire team and a machine were dispatched to the scene for additional monitoring and inspection.

Checks on Twitter found that users from various locations also felt the tremors.

The reactions from the public included seeking confirmation of the incident after feeling the ground shake.

“Guysss, in Malaysia, am I the only who felt the tremors????”
“I thought I was having a headache when I stood up just now. It’s very rare to experience earthquakes in Malaysia that you don’t know when one occurs.”
