Strange cloud formation in Sabah sets social media abuzz

Sabahans who woke up early Monday morning and looked outside their windows were probably stunned to see strange wave-like clouds in the sky.

According to a report by The New Straits Times‘ Roy Goh, the natural phenomenon — known as ‘arcus clouds’ — occured from around 7am to 9am, more prominently in areas such as Beaufort and Papar. The strange sighting was reportedly followed by a heavy downpour.

Sitti Sahrah Mohd Desa, a resident of Kampung Lumut, told the daily that she saw the strange clouds while she was on her way to work in Beaufort town around 7.40am.

“It was gloomy and looked scary. This is the first time I am seeing such clouds,” she was quoted as saying.

Marif Yusof, the headmaster of SK Paras Damit, told NST that he saw the cloud formation during the weekly assembly at the school compound.

“We were shocked and I had to call off the assembly because it worried me. Then the rain came and fortunately the children were already in their classrooms,” he was quoted as saying.

A Meteorological Department spokesperson told the daily that an arcus cloud is a low, horizontal cloud formation that comes with strong winds and heavy rain.

Of course, photos of the arcus clouds quickly made their way onto Facebook, with many Netizens marvelling at the natural phenomenon.
